About the French Language (La langue française)
French, a major Romance language, evolved from Vulgar Latin during the Roman occupation of Western Europe. Today, it serves as the official language of 29 countries—collectively known as la Francophonie—and is used by several international organizations, including the United Nations and the International Olympic Committee.
With over 300 million speakers worldwide, French ranks among the most widely spoken languages globally and shares close ties with Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and Romanian.
French Language Proficiency Levels (CEFR Framework)
The French language is divided into six levels of proficiency, structured according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR):
A1 – Beginner
Understand and use basic phrases, introduce yourself, and hold simple conversations when spoken slowly and clearly.
A2 – Elementary
Use frequent expressions for shopping, family, and work. Communicate basic needs and describe your background.
B1 – Intermediate
Grasp main ideas of familiar topics, handle travel situations, write simple texts, and share opinions with confidence.
B2 – Upper-Intermediate

C1 – Advanced
